Most people are familiar with the classic book There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly , well here is the same concept but using a salty old sailor who swallows a krill Kids will delight in the fact that this old sea dog gulps down a krill and it makes him ill He then grabs a jelly a jelly fish and wolfs that down, then a fish, a squid.well you get the picture The refrain, I don t know why he swallowed the krill It ll make him ill will be fun for you to repeat together as the story progresses Each sea food item increases in size as the old fellow continues his eating frenzy and kids will love the hilarity and ridiculousness of it all As all satisfied eaters do, the old sailor gives a loud burp, which alleviates his stomach pain, totally cures him and then he ships out The illustrations are so well done in gouache and pencil The pictures are bold and expressive which young readers will love The language is rhyming and singsongy is that a word , an...

There Was an Old Sailor by Claire Saxby Cassandra Allen will be published on March 1, 2014 This is an advance review of this story. There Was Old Sailor is a new spin on the classic There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly The sailor swallows a krill he doesn t want to get ill so he swallows a jellyfish to catch the krill Then one swallow leads to another As each thing he swallows gets bigger and bigger.I enjoy read this new take on There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly as it s a favorite of mine I found the new rhymes a joy to read Further, the illustrations are a great part of this book and were a pleasure to look at while reading In addition, to this story at the end of this book there are fish facts about the sea creatures that the old sailor had swallowed The joys of new rhymes will fill the air with laughter As well make the children wonder what th...

I love pretty much everything about There Was An Old Sailor From it s clever cadence to it s fun illustrations you and your child will have a blast reading this story My three year old son has even memorized some parts and loves to say them with me The story is silly but will make your kid do plenty of thinking and not just about sea animals My son flat said that swallowing some of these animals whole is impossible When I challenged his statement with He could of chewed them my son hit me back with No Mom, it pacifically says SWALLOWED not CHEEEEWED Yes, I meant to put pacifically.that s how he says it.I love that this is an actual story instead of information dumping Kids want to learn but they also want to do it in fun innovative ways Not just repeating over and over the same facts in the same ways. This book is unique and fun I m glad we found it You never know, this book may sneak it s way onto the Christmas list.To see my full review of this title a...

This is another spin on the song There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly It seems like it doesn t matter how many versions of that song I read, I still like them This one takes on a new twist that I haven t seen before The old woman is swapped for an old sailor and the farm animals are replaced by sea life The rhymes are pretty good the whole way through, and the book flows easily Nothing feels forced or awkward. The illustrations have a lovely, hand drawn, doodle like feel to them, even though they are finished paintings They also depict the sailor actually eating the animals whole, rather than just showing the animals alongside him My kids laughed at the pictures of the sailor trying to fit an whole creatures into his mouth If your kids like the Old Lady versions...

I have read many armloads of picture books to my son when he was young so I think this is one is a peach The pictures are in bright colors and are eye catching.Having never heard of the There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly which was referred to in the book jacket so this book made me think of This is the House that Jack built It uses the same pattern of repeating the previous lines in a chorus The rhyming is what really made me want to read this book My brother is severely autistic and he loves rhyming verses so I know that he will love this book There are fishy facts in the last part of this book including some that I didn t know before.I highly recommend this book fo...
