Mid 19th century romance adventure tragedy supposedly translated and summarized from old Italian manuscripts, which allows Stendhal some room as an intrusive narrator for commentary on the prevailing attitudes of the 16th century compared to 19th Mostly pretty fun, and with an unforced sense of impending disaster as just inevitable rather than due to authorial machinations and if blame is to be allocated, it seems mostly to go to family, rather than the characters themselves Not really reach Mid 19th century romance adventure tragedy supposedly translated and summarized from old Italian manuscripts, which allows Stendhal some room as an intrusive narrator for commentary on the prevailing attitudes of the 16th century compared to 19th Mostly pretty fun, and with an unforced sense of impending disaster as just inevitable rather than due to authorial machinations and if blame is to be allocated, it seems mostly to go to family, rather than the characters themselves Not really reaching, either, but then its minor Stendhal, even if the only of his that I ve read

Praises for the nice bound and convenient edition from the Art of the Novella books Not so much for the book itself Exactly what to make of Stendhal s, The Abbess of Castro As an adventure novel there are plots and raiding parties but it lacks swash to its buckle There is much of the star crossed lovers She the daughter of the richest man in town, he among the poorest, until he morphs into a high order highway man Still as a romance it is too Machiavellian We are told up front that where Praises for the nice bound and convenient edition from the Art of the Novella books Not so much for the book itself Exactly what to make of Stendhal s, The Abbess of Castro As an adventure novel there are plots and raiding parties but it lacks swash to its buckle There is much of the star crossed lovers She the daughter of the richest man in town, he among the poorest, until he morphs into a high order highway man Still as a romance it is too Machiavellian We are told up front that where official justice is limited to those with money enough to buy, the poor must needs turn to the local brigands But the following story never seems to be one about justice Stendhal is one of the early realists, but this is hardly Balzac with blunderbusses A dark satire is likely given the introductory remarks about the lack of law for those who cannot buy it After all satire does not have to be funny, right The book is supposed to be a translation of the actual facts of a 16th century doom love The narrator frequently interjects his thoughts about the pair and their milieu Then he can contrast how the same situation would have played out in the 19th So perhaps satire is the key By the end I was not sure I cared if was intended to be satire. The Abbess of Castro has enough of the elements of romance, a la Romeo and Juliet and the action of Scaramouch to qualify it as family reading The cynicism is deep enough that many of the pre teens will miss it Further the Abbess can be thought of as a strong independent woman, while her Bandit, warrior suiter, Giulio provides enough action to keep male readers attentive Blunderbusses, secret passages, planning a convent escape and the buying of privileges, banditti, vengeful rich father and hopeless romance How can one hate all these appeals to the romantic I do not hate the book I just cannot assure myself that it is about anything It cannot be described as a thing of sound and fury neither can I testify to what it signifies If it wereentertaining, it could be called a light read but, well let s call it a light read, it is just not that much of one

Reminded me very much of medieval romances la Chretien de Troyes, at least in the first part of the book, for its style and content Nothing new or different, seems like Stendhal just decided to mix some Romeo and Juliet style drama with a dash of chanson de geste and roman courtois The second part though feels completely different, almost pertaining to a different story, the characters develop in a sudden way, just like the writing and style Not without a reason it is based on an old It Reminded me very much of medieval romances la Chretien de Troyes, at least in the first part of the book, for its style and content Nothing new or different, seems like Stendhal just decided to mix some Romeo and Juliet style drama with a dash of chanson de geste and roman courtois The second part though feels completely different, almost pertaining to a different story, the characters develop in a sudden way, just like the writing and style Not without a reason it is based on an old Italian manuscript narrating a certain event which I won t reveal here hate spoilering. The event offered very good material but Stendhal just couldn t resist some extra drama that suits a medieval author specializing in legends and poems which I m actually a fan of , rather than a 19th century guy 3 stars for the simplicity, wonderful landscape descriptions, and the convent part Otherwise it would ve been 2
