Fun, action packed, good character development, and with a pretty good depth of world building for so short a story However, unlike other novellas I ve read, which seem to have such vast breadth and scope in their small amount of pages, this one felt, well, legitimately short somehow It has a beginning, middle, and end, but by the time I got to said end, I was left wanting a littleIt whet my appetite, but didn t quite satisfy Lucky for me, this book has a sequel.

You enjoy short soft science fiction reads This one is for you With dolphins, Orcas, and a powerful enemy on a new planet. There is danger here, both internal and external Internal for Harp and Sia, external for them and the rest of the crew and inhabitants of the planet This is an interesting start to a new idea with psychic and song communication FULL REVIEW Harp and Sia are aboard Trellia heading to Ptaal to research the planet the Democracy has lost touch with over three hundred ye You enjoy short soft science fiction reads This one is for you With dolphins, Orcas, and a powerful enemy on a new planet. There is danger here, both internal and external Internal for Harp and Sia, external for them and the rest of the crew and inhabitants of the planet This is an interesting start to a new idea with psychic and song communication FULL REVIEW Harp and Sia are aboard Trellia heading to Ptaal to research the planet the Democracy has lost touch with over three hundred years ago They are part of a crew that is to confirm the ecological stability and that there are no Viciss, the dark and dangerous enemy to humans and all kinds When they arrive Ptaal, things are not as they thought Sia, being a Data Scout dolphin and keeps all the data, is evacuated from the ship to try and save the data Harp, a blind genius boy who has his own psychic abilities due to an illegal testing, is left on the ship and has to find a way to fend off the enemy to save what s left of his mothers crew The Highsong is hard for both to reach, but is the only way to stop the enemyeven if it means their own lives.A story of inner and physical obstacles that must be beaten Harp and Sia are different yet very much the same Both are stubborn Harp is a young blind boy that was found by Captain Cait Hess She adopted him and he s been trying to control the test that was done to him He now has a ring around his head that tells when he s close to having a fit, when his mindsong becomes strong, and could kill him with the fluctuation of it The Orca Highsonger and warrior helps him get through these episodes Sia is a Data Scout who surveys and retrieves data, also helps with Harp s fits, but she s not as strong as her teacher Locuxu yet.I found this to be light in science fiction Harp has Braille generators on his wrists and the halo anchored to his head There is talk of the planet Ptaal that was terraformed Even the breathing ring apparatus the dolphins wear But the science is light when it comes to it Easy to understand There is talk of Highsong, mindsong, and Onesong in the book You learn as you go what they are But in general they are psychic songs that are sung that the Risen can hear and use.I am very much an ocean lover, particularly dolphins and orcas So for me it was neat to see a way was found to communicate with them It is neat that through this Highsong and socorder to see them speak to humans. There is danger here, both internal and external Internal for Harp and Sia, external for them and the rest of the crew and inhabitants of the planet This is an interesting start to a new idea with psychic and song communication I m curious to learn

Review originally posted on my blog is the debut novella by Laura Jennings which I found to be very well written and it does a good job in showing off the author s talent The story itself is set in a universe where humanity has genetically engineered dolphins to help fight off an alien force The reader specifically gets to follow a blind boy and a dolphin who are travelling to a lost colony world where they uncover an alien infestation that require Review originally posted on my blog is the debut novella by Laura Jennings which I found to be very well written and it does a good job in showing off the author s talent The story itself is set in a universe where humanity has genetically engineered dolphins to help fight off an alien force The reader specifically gets to follow a blind boy and a dolphin who are travelling to a lost colony world where they uncover an alien infestation that requires them working together to save their spacecraft and the life still remaining on the planet Personally, the story made me think of David Brin s Uplift novels which have a similar premise in which animals are made sentient by humanity. The plot is rather interesting and at times quite novel I particularly liked the concept of the Highsong which was well thought out and the author has done quite a good job in explaining what could have been a complex concept in a way that the readers can easily understand One thing I did note though was that it did feel a little slow at first, however once the initial set up is complete the book speeds up into a fun and entertaining light sci fi story. In regards to the characters, due to this being a novella I don t feel that we get long enough to fully understand them but there is enough there to make them interesting and believable I would really like to learnabout them, which I think is a good outcome for a story of this length I now just have to hope that Laura Jennings has plans to enhance and add to their story in the future. In summary, I did enjoy Highsong and I hope to readin the future about both the characters introduced in this novella and the universe itself It is a short story so don t expect to spend hours reading it, but it is quite creative and I think it would be a nice quick read for someone wanting to try out some sci fi as the book isn t bogged down in hard sci fi elements like techno babble etc

Just a solid 3.0 rating I liked it, the premise was really fascinating, but the story just fell a little short. This was definitely different from a lot of other fiction that catches my attention how often do you come across psychic dolphins and it honestly was pretty well done for a quick novella I noticed only about three typos, I think though I wish there was a lotto the plot because I could have gone on reading about the characters and this situation for a long while There were q Just a solid 3.0 rating I liked it, the premise was really fascinating, but the story just fell a little short. This was definitely different from a lot of other fiction that catches my attention how often do you come across psychic dolphins and it honestly was pretty well done for a quick novella I noticed only about three typos, I think though I wish there was a lotto the plot because I could have gone on reading about the characters and this situation for a long while There were quite a few places where I felt we were rushing through things rather than enjoying them, so it definitely could have been givenattention in that regard I also think the reason my rating is lower has a lot to do with the fact that I felt it shied away from its genrethan I liked That said, this isn t advanced hard science fiction that might scare new readers to the genre away, and it still managed to have its own charm with unique characters and plot Plus, after reading this one, I am interested in grabbing the next in the series, which is always a good sign that an author has done their job

Highsong is a novella crafted lovingly in the spirit of Ecco the Dolphin While this world is certainly not the same of the video game, there are cute little references that will delight anyone familiar with the time traveling dolphin The space ship is called The Trellia, for example.Don t mistake this as a knock off, however Homage is just that, and Highsong s universe is it s own The writing is easy to read and intelligent, riddled with well done research Jennings knows her stuff I wish i Highsong is a novella crafted lovingly in the spirit of Ecco the Dolphin While this world is certainly not the same of the video game, there are cute little references that will delight anyone familiar with the time traveling dolphin The space ship is called The Trellia, for example.Don t mistake this as a knock off, however Homage is just that, and Highsong s universe is it s own The writing is easy to read and intelligent, riddled with well done research Jennings knows her stuff I wish it was longer though The main characters had a rich assortment of backstory, but given the breed of a novella there wasn t enough time to explore any given one I liked Harp, and I liked Sia, but I didn t have a strong enough connection with them This could have been fixed with length Ah well Here s to hoping Jennings will decide to revisit this world because I m curious as hell.I did pick up on grammatical errors and some misplaced wording though shot became hot at one point It could have used the eyes of another editor Despite that, I definitely recommend it and agree with another reviewer that this would make a great gateway sci fi book

Note The author provided me with a free copy in exchange for an honest review.First things first This is well written, organized, and a stellar showing of Jennings talent No doubt we ll see a lotfrom her in the future and I sincerely look forward to her future work For me, I was expectingof a harder science fiction than a young adult toned novella So, in that case, I was disappointed Though, to be fair to the author, that s my fault and not the fault of her work My interest i Note The author provided me with a free copy in exchange for an honest review.First things first This is well written, organized, and a stellar showing of Jennings talent No doubt we ll see a lotfrom her in the future and I sincerely look forward to her future work For me, I was expectingof a harder science fiction than a young adult toned novella So, in that case, I was disappointed Though, to be fair to the author, that s my fault and not the fault of her work My interest in the book faded a couple of times in the book, mostly because I struggled to connect with Harp the human boy and Sia the dolphin In the end, if the combination of dolphins and space travel interests you in the least, this is definitely the book for you I d also recommend this as a gateway book for anyone who hasn t read any science fiction It has enough imagination to be different and interesting, without reading like a technical journal or assuming a base knowledge of common science fiction terms and plotlines. It s worth picking up and giving a try
