There is so much wise instruction to Christians in this book I love it It’s encouraging to me that others also struggle with the “old man” like I do It’s also encouraging to me that Paul says it’s possible to “put off the old man” That’s what I try to do every day to put of the old and put on the new to become better at the things that drag me downDuring this most recent reading of this book I visit it often Colossians 38 9 stood out to me“But now you yourselves are to put off all these anger wrath malice blasphemy filthy language out of your mouth Do not lie to one another since you have put off the old man with his deeds”How many of us get angry at times? What about that filthy language that I read in Christian fiction books? And lying don’t get me started on how bad this can be out there among Christians It’s crucial that we learn to stop doing these things especially when we take Colossians 121 23 into consideration“And you who once were alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works yet now He has reconciled in the body of His flesh through death to present you holy and blameless and above reproach in His sight—if indeed you continue in the faith grounded and steadfast and are not moved away from the hope of the gospel which you heard which was preached to every creature under heaven of which I Paul became a minister”Did you catch that word “if”? “If indeed you continue in the faith” is the key phrase in that verse to me Faith without action is dead Our actions prove who we serve God or Satan So looking at the above verses about filthy language and anger and lying to one another who would those things prove we are serving?Let us be very careful in how we choose to behave toward one another Let us lay down our anger malice wrath filthy language lying and blasphemy Let us choose kindness longsuffering tender mercies humility meekness patience and forgiveness Colossians 312 13

What an astonishing wonderful bookPaul never met the Colossians in person but had heard about their acceptance of the gospel and their faith in the Lord Knowing he had these brothers and sisters in Christ he longed to meet them but in the meantime he wrote this letter now known as the New Testament book of ColossiansHe begins with a beautiful prayer for the Colossians one well worth praying for oneself and for one's loved ones “we have not ceased to pray for you asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord fully pleasing to him bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God May you be strengthened with all power according to his glorious might for all endurance and patience with joy giving thanks to the Father who has ualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light”Following is a description of what the Lord has done for us something so tremendous that we should bow our knee and worship Him forever “He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son in whom we have redemption the forgiveness of sins” Ah Taste and see that the Lord is good Next is a description of Jesus well worth memorizing “He is the image of the invisible God the firstborn of all creation For by him all things were created in heaven and on earth visible and invisible whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him And he is before all things and in him all things hold together And he is the head of the body the church He is the beginning the firstborn from the dead that in everything he might be preeminent For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell and through him to reconcile to himself whether on earth or in heaven making peace by the blood of his cross”All this in just the first chapterWhat a rich rich bookNote the author of this book is not anonymous as Goodreads says; it is the apostle Paul by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit

re reading through the NT at the end of 2020 The Message paraphraseThis seems especially relevant to me right now from Chapter 2God brought you alive—right along with Christ Think of it All sins forgiven the slate wiped clean that old arrest warrant canceled and nailed to Christ’s cross He stripped all the spiritual tyrants in the universe of their sham authority at the Cross and marched them naked through the streetsSo don’t put up with anyone pressuring you in details of diet worship services or holy days All those things are mere shadows cast before what was to come; the substance is ChristDon’t tolerate people who try to run your life ordering you to bow and scrape insisting that you join their obsession with angels and that you seek out visions They’re a lot of hot air that’s all they are They’re completely out of touch with the source of life Christ who puts us together in one piece whose very breath and blood flow through us He is the Head and we are the body We can grow up healthy in God only as he nourishes usSo then if with Christ you’ve put all that pretentious and infantile religion behind you why do you let yourselves be bullied by it? “Don’t touch this Don’t taste that Don’t go near this” Do you think things that are here today and gone tomorrow are worth that kind of attention? Such things sound impressive if said in a deep enough voice They even give the illusion of being pious and humble and ascetic But they’re just another way of showing off making yourselves look important

In past readings of Paul's letters I've rarely paid than cursory attention to the salutations or the closing remarks to particular individuals These parts just didn't seem all that applicable since we're largely left to guess at who these people are outside of obvious exceptions such as Luke the dearly loved physician Col 414 CSBThis time around the circumstances OUTSIDE of the contents of the letter seem just as interesting as the letter itselfAt the end of Colossians as per his pattern Paul spends the euivalent of several paragraphs giving shout outs to a series of valued colleagues and loved ones commending encouraging and exhorting themThen all of a sudden at the VERY end almost as an afterthought he drops what might be three of the most suggestive words in the New Testament Remember my chainsAre these chains literal or metaphorical? Was he under house arrest in prison or what? It's hard to know for sure even after looking it up So many details have been lost to history I'm thinking it's house arrest or at least a prison with a loose policy on visitorsIt's interesting that Paul prefaces this with I Paul am writing this greeting with my own handSo I guess it's fair to assume he wasn't manacled to the wall if he was allowed to hold a writing instrumentGiven that he had several people who it seems were allowed to spend time with him it's probably also safe to assume that the hearers of this letter would have known about the circumstances of his chains too whatever they wereSo many uestions So many ways of reading between the lines But perhaps the most crucial point of all is that while Paul was enduring challenges that were most likely far severe than what most of his audience endured he didn't dwell on it He spends 98% of his word count addressing the needs of othersFood for thought

Colossians another lovely poignant wisdom filled letter from Paul I really enjoy reading this book 9 For this reason we also since the day we heard it do not cease to pray for you and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; 10 that you may walk worthy of the Lord fully pleasing Him being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; 11 strengthened with all might according to His glorious power for all patience and longsuffering with joy; 12 giving thanks to the Father who has ualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light Colossians 19 12 6 As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord so walk in Him 7 rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith as you have been taught abounding in it with thanksgiving Colossians 16 7

One of the worst books in the New Testament the letter to the Colossians tells us all about Paul's sexism and slavery apologism

This is one of the books of the Bible I've always favored its positive and uplifting and has a good focus on both philosophical and practical parts of life and also mentions the various mysteries inherent in trying to understand divine things and truth On top of that it includes some of my favorite passages such as 112 20 and 22 3 which have this cosmic vision of Christ and the holistic harmony that his peace is said to bring On that note I appreciated those refreshing reminders and recognized those themes but this time around I came away surprisingly dissatisfied with Paul's development and practical outworking He uses themes of universal application referencing thrones powers rules authorities and the structural Church and specifically says that the Gospel is being known all over the world and in the kingdom of God there are no racial cultural or social barriers or distinctions I personally believe this is one of the strong points of Christianity and most accurately represented by Jesus' example as he interacted with social outcasts of all types and associated with people who were marginalized and discriminated against in his own time by his fellow countrymen His lifestyle and eventual death sentencing were nonconformist counter cultural anti institutional responses to culturally and religiously engrained discrimination and in him we see a very active opposition to social evilAlthough Paul's letter to the Colossians thematically endorses this the practical outworking sadly falls flat Instead of offering any sort of radical rethinking the last two chapters are very passively complicit with the roles and norms of his present day He doesn't urge the creation of euality for slaves women but asks for polite and fair treatment to them by men and recommends the women and slaves to be patient and pretty much stayed focused on eternal and ethereal concepts no comfort for them in this lifetime Last year I read Beyond Good and Evil by Nietzsche and the foundation for his argument against the subservient ethics of Christianity is exactly here essential Christian morality is a pathethic coping mechanism for the poor to passively accept their fate Especially in light of the institutionalization and cultural adaptation that Christianity would give in to time and time again as well as in general one can see the early glimpses in this letter In our own time when action toward euality and harmony is so urgent I wish this book was pressing in its prioritization of a truly and radically eual community the Church and its endeavors in the world rather than relying on lofty doctrines and highly individualized moralism which doesn't extend to the social spheres
