1 Timothy is one of Paul's letters to his young friend son in the faith Timothy I've so enjoyed reading this book and especially loved it this time around Timothy sounds like he was such a godly young manSo yes It was insightful intriguing bold comforting profound It's a book of the Bible after all smilesShort and awesome Lots of lovely verses 8 For bodily exercise profits a little but godliness is profitable for all things having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come 1 Timothy 48 12 Let no one despise your youth but be an example to the believers in word in conduct in love in spiritb in faith in purity 1 Timothy 412 Do not rebuke an older man but exhort him as a father younger men as brothers older women as mothers younger women as sisters with all purity 1 Timothy 51 2 20 O Timothy Guard what was committed to your trust avoiding the profane and idle babblings and contradictions of what is falsely called knowledge— 21 by professing it some have strayed concerning the faith 1 Timothy 620 21

First Timothy is the longest of the three Pastoral Epistles so named because each is addressed to an individual pastor from Paul with an interest in building faithful congregations Paul's primary concern is to impart practical advice to help Timothy form a faithful congregation Lots of wisdom gems in this very short book of the Bible

Sidenote The reason for such vague and short and eh words on each of these books is because I wasn't challenging the study of the Bible when I read these I was challenging myself to read the whole Bible in a year because I knew it would be discipline to keep at it daily I do however plan to pick up a book and study what it is saying Those will be longer reads and notesSo here is my review from my Read the Bible in a Year challenge Usually just snippets of thoughts and random things I liked about the book itself Nothing in depthSo here is my review of 1 TimothyAll these books are super short But they are so good I can't wait to actually study the Timothy books

1 and 2 Timothy are the last two letters Paul wrote just before his death He gives his parting words to his heir his son in the faith Timothy Paul expresses confidence in Timothy and in his own fate after death May we all face death with such faith

I give this 3 stars as a way to express my mixed feelings Unlike say 1 and 2 Corinthians or most of the other letters of the New Testament this is written not to a church ie a collective but to an individual an individual in fact who was one of Paul's closest friendsWhich I think we can safely assume means that what he writes in this letter comes from the heartAnd to a 21st century reader that makes it all the difficult to read passages like thisA woman is to learn uietly with full submission I do not allow a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; instead she is to remain uiet For Adam was formed first then Eve And Adam was not deceived but the woman was deceived and transgressed But she will be saved through childbearing if they continue in faith love and holiness with good sense211 15What? This isn't even coherent logic Remember Jacob and Esau? Esau was the older the one who was formed first but which one ended up in a superior position? The younger And even if you accept Paul's perspective on Adam and Eve to say that the first woman's mistake means that all women throughout all time deserve to pay for it by being subjugated to the men in their lives I don't even know what to say to that And what does he mean by saying women will be saved through childbearing? I thought people were saved through Christ and Christ alone? And then there's the admonition that believing slaves should regard their own masters as worthy of all respect and that a believing slave who has a believing master should be all the hard working because they're fellow believers? Why shouldn't the believing master just let the slave go out of Christian charity?Yes it's fair to argue that there might be some historical and cultural context we're missing and that if we frown on Paul TOO much we will become guilty of chronological snobbery and of missing the glaring sins and blindness of our OWN time but there are still parts of Paul's letters that are hard to figure at best and outright offensive at worst at least at first glanceThere is of course plenty of good advice here that Paul gives to Timothy and that shouldn't be overlooked either But it would be dishonest to avoid the awkward parts just to emphasize the good parts that need no defense

Overall again a lot going on to ponder hereWe have the idea that when law is used correctly it is a good thing It is simply just not really for Christian believers but to PROTECT them against true evil such as murderers fornicators and the likeI was HIGHLY confused at the passage about men and women in the church 28 15 in that it sounds to me like Paul is making a judgement call of his own NOT what Christ said or necessary wanted Paul says I do not permit not that Christ does not permit It seemed like a fuzzy area that wasn't uite made clear EDIT I did some research and many scholars believe that Paul DID NOT write this book That this was a forgery used by certain groups to further their own ideals It makes sense to me I am happy that it made me think about it enough to further investigate in my own There are MANY contradictions and TONS of transcription changesand it makes sense The Bible was written by humans As long as we all remember to love one anotherThe passage about food made me wonder if that means the movement away from true food in favor of highly processed food like productsThere was also a passage about believing old wives tales that made me think of anti vaxxers My favorite passage was from 67 8 in which it is stated that we came into the world with nothing and will leave the same way Yes Infinite yesWe also had the love of money being the root of all evil mentioned here and I always think that is a very important distinction because you still need money to live but you shouldn't become obsessed with itAll and all one of my favorites of the New Testament but I still enjoyed Romans the most so far

Timothy was an elder of the Ephesus church to whom Paul writes a letter directed to him as an individual So far out of Paul's books Timothy is the first individual to whom he has written; the rest prior to Timothy were directed to churches Ephesians Galatians etc While the context of 1 Timothy must be considered in full detail especially when it comes to Chapter 2 Verses 11 15 the concepts are universal and applicable today Paul writes to Timothy about leaders in the church respect for the elders the true faith and also encourages him throughout There is much to unpack and I have yet to reread after a study in context But I am grateful for the wisdom and theology that Paul provides There are many verses in here that I see are true yet still to this day You are young but do not let anyone treat you as if you were not important 1 Tim 412The Holy Spirit clearly says that in the later times some people will stop believing the true faith They will obey spirits that lie and will follow the teachings of demons Such teachings come from hypocrites men who cannot see what is right and what is wrong It is as if their understanding were destroyed by a hot iron – 1 Tim 41 2

  9. Sherry Elmer Sherry Elmer says:

I find it interesting that the first letters Paul wrote were to churches Thessalonians Romans; the letters to the Corinthians Galatians but the final letters he wrote were to his “spiritual children” personal letters to one man—to Timothy and to Titus along with his letter to Philemon slightly earlier On the one hand I realize that the letters were written as the Holy Spirit inspired them so there is a divine order to them But on the human side I wonder if it is at least in part that the elder Paul realized as so many people do that as life goes on the thing that matters most is relationships Men may prioritize their jobs even jobs as important as that of an apostle of Christ in their younger years but as time goes on hopefully they realize that relationships are of vital importance Also at the end of one’s life the desire to pass on what is most important to others becomes strong Thus Paul knows his time on earth is short and he wishes to pass on what he knows to his “spiritual children” and we are blessed to share that wisdom as God preserved it for us in the New Testament

  10. PT PT says:

This is one of my favorite books of the Bible Paul’s words give us hope and clear instruction on how to live and act as Christians Every chapter and section attacks a different subject that we all need to hear and take inOne of my favorite verses from 1 Timothy is 6 18 19“ They are to do good to be rich in good works to be generous and ready to share thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future so that they may take hold of that which is truly life”
