In this seventh book in the essay series Tim Keller takes on the message of the Last Supper and discusses how Christians have two advocates Christ and the Holy Spirit This means a level of security for the believer And yet there is a lack of joy and of fear in many Christians There is a fear of not measuring up but with these advocates going before God on our behalf there is nothing to worry about We live lives of uiet desperation when our focus should be on the eternalThis is the second essay in the series I've read Both are short and perhaps overpriced since over half the volume is a sample chapter from another book but the uality of writing is good and so very encouraging

This book provides the best explanation I’ve ever read of what the Bible means when it says that the Christian is “In Christ” It brought clarity to a truth that was for me difficult to grasp

This is the 2nd book that I have read by Tim Keller in The Encounters with Jesus series and it was definitely well worth the time it took to read it Keller just like in the previous books in this series does such a great job making abundantly clear his main point in the book our first advocate is Jesus and the second advocate is the Holy Spirit who comes to testify about Jesus and following his main point up with plenty of illustrations to help readers understand what he is trying to say I find it a humbling thing when I ponder on just how little the apostles understood about Christ and what He had come to accomplish on not only their behalf but on behalf of the elect whom the Father had given him They had been in close intimate fellowship with the creator of the world and yet they showed by their speech and actions that they were in fact clueless as to much of what Jesus had been telling them was going to take place on the Cross and after His resurrection from the dead Pondering these thoughts thanks to this small book makes my appreciation for God sending the second advocate the Holy Spirit to enlighten me to the truth of who Christ wasis and what had to be accomplished on my behalf so that I could have a regenerated heart and a renewed relationship with the God who bought me with the precious blood of his Son I received a free copy of this book from Penguin Group Publishers via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review

I connected completely to this short book Unlike The First Christian this endeavor kept me reading until I finished it It's not long but there was so much good stuff insideWhen Jesus talks about God sending another counselor to whom is he speaking of? And if this counselor is another one who was the first? These are the uestions that kept me flipping throughKeller talks about Jesus and The Holy Spirit as our defense attorney team I wanted to keep reading about how Jesus stands in our place making the case for us as to why Christians should be acuitted Then when he highlighted the Holy Spirit as reminding us and teaching us like a defense attorney would at the table I wanted to keep reading his thoughts on this topic but it actually felt complete as short as it wasI see that a complete book is coming out that will probably include these short books but I would love to see an expansion of these thoughtsGreat stuff Pastor KellerThis book was provided for review at no cost by Dutton Publishing

  5. Mathew Mathew says:

Keller examines John 14 and Jesus’s high priestly prayer He hones in on the promise of the Holy Spirit in particular He looks at our natural understanding of a bar of justice and our need for an advocate He shows how Jesus advocates for us and how the Holy Spirit complements in this role at Pentecost He demonstrates how a God who is a good example and supporter isn’t enough “Those things would be helpful but on their own they would fall short of what we need If that bar of justice exists and our consciences bear witness to the fact that it does then we need a true Advocate” Kindle Location 148 of 610He also contrasts nicely the work of the first Advocate from the second Jesus he argues advocates for you to the Father think Romans 8 whereas the Spirit advocates from God to us He is testifying to the truths that Jesus proclaims above in the throneroom of grace 186 of 610Keller explores the depths of the trinity in a truly approachable fashion He writes with urgency for our Christian life These are truths we need to thrive as sons and daughters of God

  6. Scott Lake Scott Lake says:

This is uite a short read just 20 or so pages the last 20 pages are an excerpt from a different book by Keller In this book Keller clarifies Jesus' statement that He is sending another advocate This statement implies two advocates the first being Jesus and the second the Holy Spirit It is a tidy and easy to understand description
