A free PDF copy was gifted to me by the author in exchange for a fair review Just finished reading it and it was a kaleidascopic whirl through the land of Shenandoah Mountain Lake an area in Virginia which the author writes so lovingly about Silent Waltz is a murder mystery but than that it's a study in character and the depths some of the novel's participants will sink toSalem Matthews IV ex US Army Special Forces officer is a self made successful businessperson blessed with a loving wife and 'seer' daughter Her travails were touched upon in previous novels and only dealt with here in a cursory manner but we know something is up from the first page where Matthews struggles in from the water during a storm The author paints a vivid picture of his struggle and the imagery used is stark as well as imaginativeAs to the story a mysterious corporation comes around with the expressed intent of buying up one of Matthews's properties He isn't interested in selling but the buyer a smooth glib sort tells him that he'll end up doing business one way or another and soon a series of murders and near misses occur and who's in on it and who's behind it all? The author sends us on a twisting turning journey with no shortage of suspects and a couple of murders along the way and while there are some moments that could be considered deus ex machina the arrival at the identity of the murderer is no less satisfyingPaxton's gift for imbuing each character vividly and less than perfectly I might add is considerable This is a solid read one well recommended

Stormy with a chance of murderShenandoah County is hurting Recent economic events have hit the county hard leaving it without full time law enforcement; but its home to Salem Matthews and his family and nothing is going to change that When a representative of a big city corporation comes calling looking to buy some of Salem’s property he’s not interested A veiled parting threat and a feeling confirm his suspicions there’s to the buyer than meets the eye Then the murders startRonald Paxton’s smartly written novel takes us into the hidden underbelly of Shenandoah County and its residents Flawed uirky and often with secrets to keep the characters spring to life as the story unfolds And how it unfolds It twists and turns unafraid to take the path down a dark alleyway as the list of people who might want Salem dead grows Well written and pleasing to read this book will not disappointThe clouds are building in Shenandoah County but Salem Matthews loves a good storm
