Yes he’s got a celebrity voice and will be appearing in Marvel Studio’s next hit movie Guardians of the Galaxy out in less than a month Yes he’s also part of one of Marvel Comics’ biggest success stories last year Brian Michael Bendis’ Guardians of the Galaxy comic But based on Skottie Young’s first issue of Rocket Raccoon even if none of that were happening there still should’ve been a Rocket Raccoon comic out YEARS ago because this first issue is an absolute blast whether you know anything about this character or not A Rocket Raccoon comic needs to be fun and funny it is about a talking raccoon like creature who likes firing guns at people; “realism” and “seriousness” aren’t even allowed within 20 feet of this title So who better than one of the finest talents working at Marvel Comics today Skottie Young to not just draw this beast but also script it? NOBODY that’s who From the Star Wars esue opening seuence where Rocket saves an alien princess to the first date at Groot’s wrestling match spot the Southern Bastards jacket to the chase through the sewers this first issue is all aces It also takes its cue from an Infinite comic Marvel’s digital line starring Rocket from last year written by Bendis and drawn by Ming Doyle where he discovered he wasn’t the last of his kind that Infinite comic along with the others are included in this issue for free via a digital code so fill yer boots and that the only other one of him is evil and framing him for murders he didn’t commit Skottie Young’s art is insert superlative of choice here It doesn’t matter what word you use because it’s all of them incredible wonderful amazing beautiful uniue testibularly fantastic It’s such a gorgeous comic as you’d expect from the artist of Oz and the one of a kind gem A Babies Vs X Babies which was better than the entire AVX seriesYoung proves he can write like the devil too giving Rocket a sassy funny cute badass charming attitude and awesome personality Thankfully too he’s not spouting the lame catchphrase Bendis gave him “Blam Murdered you” The other Guardians make a cameo via phone link as Rocket slowly realises he’s not alone and their side adventure looks so good it made me wish Young was also scriptingdrawing the Guardians series And how inspired was it that he made Groot a wrestler? That whole seuence with Groot vs some Lovecraftian horror was brilliant especially when Rocket really got into supporting his buddy and the date who was surprised at the language he used Rocket Raccoon #1 is easily my favourite comic this week and definitely my favourite in a while It’s a great first issue and gives the series the best possible start long may Young writedraw the title he was born to do Did I mention the art in this is pretty good? Why are you still reading this review go and read this comic

I have to admit I really enjoyed the Free Comic Book Day Rocket Raccoon one shot so I picked this up in spite of some reservations about the art style I really liked the art team on the FCBD issue and knew this one was different Thankfully all mis givings about the art were gone only a couple pages in Young has a great feel for the characters all the Guardians not just Rocket as evidenced by snappy conversations and his action seuences were easy to read The book takes itself just seriously enough to make the wise cracks stand out but never so serious as to induce eye rollingThis might end up being a subscription and there're very few books that get that honor from me

This is exactly the way a Rocket Raccoon story should go It is filled with witty dialog absurd action and a vivid story in a heightened reality backdrop Skottie Young does an amazing job creating a narrative that is idyllic for such an absurd character while surprisingly keeping things groundedand accompanying the good story with fantastic art I wouldn't have expected less from the man who brought us x men babies and toddler avengers

Continuing with my admiration and fangirl ing for the Guardians of the Galaxy specifically Rocket and Groot I started this comic after finishing Groot's I have to say that I'm totally in love with everything here The story the characters the colors and most importantly the art itself I just found about Skottie Young few days ago from pinterest cause as you can guess I'm pinning a lot of Guardians photos back there to use as my phone's wallpaper Rocket one of the guardians defender of the galaxy and hero to many while going on a date with a pretty girl finds out that he is wanted for crimes he didn't do And by whole? By himself? Or someone like him? And all this time he thought he is the last of his kind but the criminal's appearance changed that thought What do you think he did as a good fellow? Just turned himself in for making everything easier or was it for something else? I can give this than 5 stars Like I said everything about it is awesome makes me want to read everything in one sitting but don't want to finish the comics in the same time Ugh Readers' problems

Although this short book starts out humorous it soon becomes and stays fairly gruesome and sensualsuggestive particularly for a kid's bookI also did not think it was all that amusing overall partly due to that reason but also I am not really part of the target audience Rocket is just a stereotypical self praising woman chasing character and a lot of the humor is not very original or all that funny I thought

If I didn't already love Rocket and Groot I do nowI'm not the biggest fan of superhero comics that aren't big time event ish stories injustice infinity war etc but this was full of so much humour zany in jokes and action that I had a blast Skottie Young's art style is so detailed and fits so well with this kind of story I should really read from him

  8. Cori Dantio Cori Dantio says:

It's definitely odd with him being the main character when I've only ever seen him in the Guardian movies but it's really cool at the same time It's interesting to get a look at him on his own And this story line seems like it's going to be filled with interesting events

  9. Nicole Nicole says:

25 stars Nothing stood out to me positively or negatively
